La IBM Smart Green Pallet

Reinventing the fresh-product supply chain through IoT

Each year, throughout the logistics cycle, 5% of the food produced worldwide is lost before it even reaches store shelves.

Not because it is unfit for consumption, but because we don’t know where it is, what condition it is in, or how long it has spent in transit under poor conditions.

A lack of traceability that ultimately leads to outright destruction.

In response to this challenge, IBM has developed the Smart Green Pallet—an intelligent, connected pallet powered by Ineo-Sense IoT technology that enhances traceability, sustainability, and cold-chain management.

Operational benefits are rapid and significant, with a payback period of less than two years.

Co-developed with a consortium of pallet manufacturers, retailers, researchers from Aix-Marseille University, plastics and composites experts, ADEME, and Ineo-Sense—under the governance of IBM (creator and innovator of the SGP)—the Smart Green Pallet already supports all fresh-product flows for a major French retailer: 80,000 logistics units, 35 warehouses, and 600 stores across France.

  1. Winner of the France 2030 Logistics 4.0 initiative, this solution is based on a pallet made of recycled plastic, with a 10-year lifespan and recyclable up to six times.
  2. It integrates:
    • an Ineo-Sense IoT device: temperature monitoring, autonomous inter- and intra-site geolocation, shock detection;

    • a Cloud platform;
    • a blockchain-like architecture using a GRAI code, a unique identifier providing secure, continuous end-to-end tracking of operations.

Key figures:

  • 80,000 sensors installed (50,000 pallets + 30,000 roll cages).
  • Weight of a Smart Green Pallet: 17.5 kg, i.e., 30% less than a wooden pallet.
  • The 50,000 deployed Smart Green Pallets represent 875,000 kg of recycled plastic, equivalent to 17.5 million plastic bottles reused.

Operational benefits

  • Real-time traceability: location, temperature, humidity, shocks…
  • Continuous monitoring of the cold chain and transport conditions: reduced product losses and guaranteed product freshness, mitigating regulatory risks linked to cold-chain breaches.
  • Significant reduction in pallet and merchandise losses thanks to data-driven insights.
  • Repairable, recyclable, and reusable materials sourced in Europe: an average lifespan of 10 years compared to 1.5 years for a wooden pallet.
  • 30% reduction in the weight of handling units.
  • Measurable carbon footprint and lower CO₂ emissions thanks to reduced transport weight.

The pallet is no longer a simple support: it is an intelligent mobile sensor.
The IBM Smart Green Pallet is set to become a new standard for fresh-product logistics.

The success story of the Smart Green Pallet shows that a simple pallet—often seen as an insignificant consumable—can become a strategic link in a modern, connected, and sustainable supply chain.

By combining IoT technology with eco-friendly materials, IBM demonstrates that it is possible to align technological innovation with environmental responsibility while creating lasting value for businesses.

This innovation paves the way for a new generation of solutions where every object becomes intelligent, every transport flow is optimized, and performance goes hand in hand with positive environmental impact.
