SNCF TGV – Automated inventory using IoT scales
Eliminating stock discrepancies and reducing out-of-stock risks : SNCF uses connected scales to perform real-time inventory of spare parts needed for TGV maintenance through weight-based monitoring. SNCF's Technicentres carry out daily maintenance on hundreds of TGV trainsets to return them to service just a few hours later. This is a daily logistical challenge that requires managing several thousand spare parts of all sizes, which must be available in stock at all times.
The stakes
Operating under extremely tight deadlines to maintain and repair trainsets before they return to service, the Technicentres face production stoppages when parts listed as “in stock” in the system are not physically present in the storage area.
These stock discrepancies lead to part shortages that can immobilize a TGV. Emergency shuttle transfers between maintenance centers are an expensive workaround that disrupts both logistics and staff scheduling. The annual costs associated with undetected shortages in this maintenance Technicentre are estimated at €600,000 per year.
The deployed solution
The use of Logger-LC wireless connected scales enables dynamic automation of inventory management through weight-based control for each item reference. Discrepancies between physical stock and theoretical quantities in the ERP system are identified and corrected, eliminating the risk of undetected shortages. Restocking orders can then be automated based on weight thresholds.
The responsive and remotely visible pick/put-to-light system allows for easy identification of items needing replenishment and facilitates kit preparation for trackside operations.
200 connected scales have been deployed in the South-East European and Conflans Technicentres, ahead of a broader rollout.

Operational benefits :
- Stock discrepancies are virtually eliminated.
- Replenishment of items that reach their minimum stock level is reliable and automated.
- The reliability of technicians’ intervention schedules is improved.
- Rolling stock service availability is optimized.
- Storehouse staff save time and can focus on higher value-added tasks.
- Stock levels are reduced, and working capital requirements (WCR) are optimized to free up available cash flow.
